How to Switch from Regular Sand to Bentonite Litter

Many cats are used to regular sand in their litter box, but owners quickly discover that this is not the most practical solution. Persistent odors and difficult cleaning can be frustrating. For this reason, more and more people are choosing bentonite clumping litter, which is more efficient and hygienic. But how do you make the switch so that your cat accepts the new litter without any problems?

1. Introduce bentonite gradually

Initially, mix one part bentonite with three parts of regular sand. Over 7-10 days, increase the proportion of bentonite until it completely replaces the classic sand.

2. Use the same litter box

Cats are creatures of habit. If you change both the type of sand and the litter box at the same time, there is a risk that the cat will reject the new combination. Ideally, keep the same litter box to start with.

3. Maintain a sufficient layer

Put a 7-10 cm layer of bentonite so that it absorbs efficiently and forms compact clumps. If the layer is too thin, the cat will not have a pleasant experience and may refuse the litter box.

4. Clean daily

One of the great advantages of bentonite is quick cleaning. Remove the clumps daily and replenish with fresh sand. This way, the cat will get used to the constant freshness.

5. Be patient

Some cats accept the change immediately, others may be more reluctant. Patience is key. Avoid making the transition abruptly, so as not to create stress for your cat.
